Anointing of the Sick

What is Anointing?

Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing. Through this Sacrament, Christ strengthens the faithful who are afflicted by illness. Anointing is also a ministry of comfort for those seeking the Holy Spirit’s blessings of health, faith, or strength against temptation.

Oil of the Sick

The priest uses “Oil of the Sick” – one of the three holy oils blessed each Holy Week by the bishop. He anoints the forehead and the palms of the hands of the sick person, with very brief accompanying prayers.

Last Rites

“Last Rites” refers to the Anointing of the Sick, along with the two other Sacraments that may be received at the same time if the patient is conscious: Penance and Holy Communion.
